Top 5 Questions and Answers of the Month
1 In this section, we answer Conduit Publishers' most burning questions of the month. Find out what's top of community toolbar publishers' minds and ask a question of your own.

1. What is an 'upgrade', what is a 'refresh', and what is the difference?

Every time Conduit releases a new version, your toolbar is upgraded automatically. This action does not affect your toolbar's content. Both Firefox and IE users can also opt to check for upgrades manually. In the case of Firefox, via the Firefox Extension Manager; and in the case of IE, via an 'upgrade' button that appears automatically in the main menu of the toolbar.

When you alter the content of your toolbar, it is 'refreshed' minutes after you have executed the change(s). These changes are reflected across your users' toolbars automatically; there is no need for them to install a new version of your toolbar.

2. Am I permitted to put ads on my toolbar, and if so, how?

Yes you can! Indeed, it's a great way to monetize your toolbar! Here are a few ideas:

  • Sprinkle affiliate links amidst your toolbar's useful content
  • Create toolbar buttons with ad content
  • Configure your own gadgets with ads

NOTE: You cannot use Google Adsense on your toolbar, as it's against Google's policy. You can however make money in accordance with your toolbar's performance via the Conduit Rewards Program.

3. Does Conduit contact my toolbar users?

Conduit has no way of contacting your users, unless they contact our support team first, for toolbar help. This support is one of the biggest benefits of Conduit's fully-hosted toolbar solution. As a member of the TRUSTe Privacy Program, Conduit is committed to maintaining both your privacy and the privacy of your users. Conduit does not share your or your users' Personal Identifiable Information (PII) with third parties. Read more about Conduit's Privacy Policy.

4. Besides banners, in what other ways can I promote my toolbar?

Glad you asked! There are lots of ways to promote your toolbar (besides ad banners), and boost your downloads. Here are a few ideas, to get started:

  • Add a link to your toolbar download page, to your site's navigation bar
  • Add a 'Get my toolbar' link to your email signature
  • Feature it in your eNewsletters
  • Send an email to everyone in your database inviting them to download your toolbar
  • Buy a list of prospects in your market and invite them to join your community
  • Offer your toolbar to new members as part of the sign-up for your site
  • Give away your toolbar "for free" with services, opportunities, or merchandise
  • Tell your friends, business associates, and acquaintances about it and increase downloads by word-of-mouth
  • Talk it up on user groups and download sites, forums, and public blogs

5. What if a user consistently prefers to use a specific search engine?

For most users, web search is the most commonly used engine. But if you have a user who consistently prefers to search a peripheral engine, now you can accommodate them! Whereas it used to be that the toolbar search box reverted automatically back to the web engine every time toolbar users opened a new browser, now any toolbar user can set the default search engine of his/her choice, in three easy steps. Here's how:

  1. Scroll down the Toolbar Menu and select 'Toolbar Options'
  2. Click on the 'Additional Settings' tab
  3. De-select 'Always revert to default search engine'

That's it! By de-selecting the above option, the engine you last searched with automatically becomes the default one that appears in the next new browser you open.
