Conduit Network Grows to More Than 250,000 App Publishers & 170 Million UsersJuly 13, 2010
July 13, 2010 — San Mateo, Calif. —
Conduit®, powering
apps for its network of over 250,000 web publishers and their 170 million users, today announced that the Conduit Network has grown to more than 250,000 app publishers and 170 million users. Adoption of apps by end-users increased 233 percent between the months of July 2009 and June 2010.
According to Conduit president Adam Boyden, the growth in the Conduit Network is a clear reflection in the growing popularity of apps around the world. “While most of the buzz in the media is about mobile apps, the reality of the situation is that 118 million more people use
Conduit-powered apps than iPhone and Droid apps combined. In fact, the Conduit Network of app publishers and users is so large that we are able to identify unique trends about web app usage.”
The Conduit
App Marketplace is fueling huge growth in the consumption of
web apps among end users:
- 60 million end users consume apps from the Conduit App Marketplace every day.
- Since August of 2009, the number of web publishers that have more than one million users has grown from 1 to more than 40 in May 2010.
- More than 8 million people got the Coke Zero-Avatar App last December in the first 10 days after launch. After the success of that app, digital agency Mediatronica built another and the recently launched Coke Zero SWAT App, already has 2.5 million users.
- The Pitsi mini-game app generated more than 66 million engagements during the first 10 weeks of 2010.
Trends
Entertainment apps are the largest segment among the hundreds of verticals represented in Conduit App Marketplace; 24.4 percent of the apps were created in this category since the launch of the marketplace. End users are also hungry for
news online and app publishers responded; 19.5 percent of apps in the marketplace deliver news from sources such as
Fox News, iVillage, and TechCrunch. The number of social media apps followed closely, constituting 18.2 percent of all available apps. Also noteworthy, the
social media apps category grew fastest among end users during the last year, with adoption increasing on average by 87% each month.
Not surprisingly, the most popular apps among users are content from well-known brands like Amazon, Coke Zero, eBay, Facebook, Fox News, Hulu, Skype, YouTube, and Zynga. More surprising, however, is the remarkable uptake of apps from lesser known companies that published apps with great functionality, including TheFreeDictionary by Farlex, news by zip code from Topix, and a browser speed test by Ashampoo. These apps have been added to millions of browsers during the last year.
Sports organizations were among the most innovative in using apps for engaging fans with timely content. For example, the Triumph Media Group created an app to sell subscriptions for the Klitschko/Chambers heavyweight fight in Berlin in March. ZoneMedia created a World Cup app to give fans real-time scoring, which reached more than 14 million fans during the tournament.
“Conduit is doing for web apps, what iPhone did for mobile apps and in a bigger market – the browser. We are enabling web publishers to feed the insatiable desire by consumers to grab great content and functionality in a simple, elegant tool,” continued Boyden. “The last year has been phenomenal for Conduit not only because we have worked with some of the best brands in the world, but also, more importantly because we have leveled the playing field for small publishers and developers to give them exposure and distribution comparable to huge companies.”
